If you ask most Koreans to name a place they've visited at least once for a vacation, there's a good chance they'll say Gangneung.
I've visited Gangneung many times while living in Seoul. Some of my favorite memories of traveling there date back to the days before the high-speed train existed. I would board an early morning express bus, watch the mountains gradually replace the city skyline, and feel the excitement of leaving everyday life behind.
Today, reaching Gangneung is much easier thanks to the KTX, which takes less than two hours from Seoul. Even so, I still prefer traveling by bus. It takes a little longer, but I enjoy watching the scenery slowly change from busy highways to forests and finally to the beautiful East Sea coastline.

Ojukheon is one of Korea's most important historical sites.
It is the birthplace of Shin Saimdang, Korea's most respected female artist, and her son Yulgok Yi I, one of the country's greatest Confucian scholars.
