Myeongdong & Namsan Guide: My Favorite One-Day Itinerary in Seoul (Cable Car, Food, Shopping & Local Tips)
Even after living in Seoul for more than 30 years, Myeongdong and Namsan are two places I still enjoy revisiting whenever I feel nostalgic.
When I was a university student, my campus was just a short walk from Myeongdong. After class, my friends and I would wander through the shopping streets, try new restaurants, and browse the latest fashion trends. On pleasant afternoons, we often walked along the quiet trails behind our campus that led up Namsan Mountain. Sometimes we climbed all the way to N Seoul Tower, while on other days we took the Namsan Cable Car and enjoyed the city views without the uphill walk.
Back then, Myeongdong was mostly filled with local shoppers. Today, it has become one of Seoul's busiest international tourist districts, attracting visitors from all over the world. Although the atmosphere has changed, I still believe it is one of the best places for first-time visitors to experience Seoul.
If friends ask me for a one-day sightseeing itinerary in Seoul, I almost always recommend combining Myeongdong shopping with Namsan Mountain. One of the biggest advantages of this itinerary is convenience.
You can spend the morning shopping and tasting Korean street food in Myeongdong before heading up Namsan in the afternoon for panoramic views of Seoul. It's one of the easiest ways to experience both the energetic and peaceful sides of the city in a single day.
Whenever I take foreign friends here, it consistently becomes one of their favorite days in Seoul.
How to Get to Myeongdong
Myeongdong is located in central Seoul and is easily accessible by public transportation.

How to Get from Myeongdong to Namsan
One reason I love this itinerary is that Namsan is only a short distance from Myeongdong.
There are two main ways to reach the mountain.
Option 1: Walk
This is the route I used most often during my university days.
It takes about 10 minutes to reach the entrance of the walking trail from Myeongdong Station.
From there, the scenic walk to N Seoul Tower usually takes around 30 to 40 minutes.
If you're visiting in spring or autumn, I highly recommend walking. The tree-lined paths are beautiful and surprisingly peaceful despite being in the middle of Seoul.
Option 2: Ride the Namsan Cable Car
If you prefer not to walk uphill, the cable car is the easiest choice.
Whenever I visited with my parents or friends from overseas, we usually chose this option.

One of the tower's most famous attractions is the collection of colorful love locks left by couples from around the world.
It's also one of the best photo spots in Seoul.
Walk Along Namsan Trails
This remains my favorite part of visiting Namsan.

The streets are less crowded in the morning, making shopping much more enjoyable.

Even if you take the cable car, you'll still walk quite a bit throughout the day.
Visit Before Sunset
Arriving in the late afternoon lets you enjoy both daytime city views and Seoul's spectacular night skyline.
